Thus, Vedic Maths for CAT is an important topic to be covered by you and not just for CAT but all other aptitude based competitive exam. Towards the end of the article you will also find a Vedic Maths PDF in which you will discover important Vedic Maths tricks for multiplications, calculations, square roots etc.

So let’s begin this journey. I promise it will be worth your while.

What is Vedic Maths

Before venturing into the application concepts of Vedic Maths for CAT, I must introduce the topic to you and shed light on its history, importance and other frequently asked questions.

 “Why Vedic Maths”

“Why now”

“How can Vedic Maths help me”

If you are thinking along these lines, you’re on the right track because being inquisitive is sign of a healthy brain. And this will really help you in your journey towards cracking the CAT Exam. I will be addressing these questions soon. But first, let’s discuss what Vedic Maths is.

To put it in easy lay-man terms, Vedic Maths is the modern name used for the ancient system of Indian Mathematics. It was rediscovered from the Vedas between 1911 and 1918 by Sri Bharati Krsna Tirthaji.

His findings are published in his infamous book: “Vedic Mathematics Book by Tirthaji Maharaj”. Vedic Maths is a collection of techniques or Sutras that helps you solve mathematics in a fast, easy, and efficient manner. It is based on 16 Sutras and 13 sub-sutras which are often used for solving problems in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and calculus.

History of Vedic Maths

In the year 1957, Shri Bharathi Krishna Tirthaji Maharaj wrote the introductory volume of 16 sutras. This compendium of sutras is known to us today as Vedic Mathematics or Vedic Maths. Shri Bharathi Krishna Tirthaji Maharaj is the pioneer of Vedic Maths. He was born in the year 1884 in Puri village, Orissa. He lived from 1884 to 1960.

Shri Bharathi Krishna Tirthaji  Maharaj was a brilliant scholar with a knack for subjects like mathematics, science and humanities. Additionally, He was also an expert in Sanskrit language and had an unwavering interest in spiritualism and meditation. It is believed that He rediscovered the Vedic sutras while practicing meditation in the forest near Sringeri. Sringeri, also known as Sri Kshetra Shringeri, is a hill town located in Chikkamagaluru district in the state of Karnataka. This is where the conception of modern day Vedic Maths took place.

Benefits of Vedic Maths

I will now be showing you the benefits of Vedic Maths.

Solve: Find the square root of 1369 through the traditional methods taught to you during your school days.

Solution: If you were to find it with the conventional methods, I am sure you would find it very difficult, worst case, you might not be able to find it.

Solve: Find the square root of 1369 through the ways of Magical Maths or Vedic Maths

Solution: You will now observe how you can solve this just by having a Vedic Maths mindset. Here are the steps that you should think off.

  1. Number ends with 9, Therefore, we know that it’s a perfect square and that its square root will end with 3 or 7.
  2. Then you should think of two perfect squares between which 1369 exists.
    Numbers are 900 (302) and 1600(402).
  3. Find to whom 1369 is closer. As you will be able to see, 1369 is closer to 1600. Therefore, squareroot is nearer to 40
  4. Now from Step 2, we know that possibilities are 33 or 37 out of which 37 is closer to 40
  5. Hence squareroot of 1369 = 37.

For those of you who are struggling with maths, you may find Vedic Maths as a life changing perspective on how you look at solving maths problems in the first place. If you can see the wisdom in combining learning with pleasure, you will most certainly fall in love with Vedic Maths.

A striking feature of Vedic Maths is that the whole system is skillfully interrelated and unified. For example, the general multiplication method i.e. vedic maths multiplication can be easily reversed to allow one-line divisions and the simple squaring method i.e. vedic maths square root, can be reversed to give one-line square roots.

Vedic Maths is easy to comprehend

What is truly inspiring about Vedic Maths is that the concepts are so easy; they can be easily grasped and understood by any average student. This quality makes the whole discourse of mathematics both easy and enjoyable. If you are someone who does not particularly enjoy maths, you might just start seeing maths in a new light. This is the power of Vedic Maths. It lures you in with its tantalizingly easy concept, making maths a merry ride.

What’s more, you will soon discover that in the Vedic system, ‘difficult’ problems or huge sums can often be solved immediately by using the Vedic method. The methods used in Vedic Maths are complementary, direct and easy. With Vedic Maths, you can solve mathematical and numerical calculations in a faster manner. By using Vedic Maths tricks, you can do calculations 10-15 times faster than using conventional methods that you were taught in school.

How Vedic Maths can help you with your CAT Preparation

The Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude section of CAT are reasonably tough. It is tough, but not unachievable. Many have done it. You can do it too. And Vedic Maths can help you. How?

Competitive Exams like CAT does not just test your ability to solve problems. It also tests how accurately and how quickly you can solve the questions. Accuracy without speed is futile, and so is speed without accuracy. In a world where a 99 percentile is not enough to land you your dream college, just managing to crack the CAT Exam is not enough. You need to be amongst the handful of people who can accurately and quickly solve questions. This is where Vedic Maths can help.

As I have discussed earlier, Vedic Maths focuses on the concept of simplicity. It uses easy principles to get quick solutions for complex problems. It encourages you to mentally calculate complex math problems. This not only makes you sharper and faster in the long run, but it also builds your stamina for quantitative aptitude and reasoning: important ingredients to effortlessly crack the CAT Exam. While solving math problems with regular methods are both complex and time-consuming, with Vedic Maths tricks, numerical calculations can be done in a clean and fast manner. This is how Vedic Maths can help you with your CAT Preparation.
