The test taking window of NMAT began on 7th October. The exam is conducted this year by GMAC, the organisation which conducts the GMAT exam. In general, there weren’t any technical glitches that were reported during the exam.
The Logical Reasoning section was slightly difficult. This section was dominated by singlets as there was only one LR set consisting 4 questions. Apart from that a good number of questions were of Critical Reasoning. The options in the CR questions were opinionated instead of being logical which made the questions ambiguous. A score of 60 – 63 is achievable and will be a good score.
The Quantitative Ability section, on both the days, was not extremely difficult. A student should lay a lot of emphasis on the topics like Arithmetic and Algebra because as many as 18 questions were from these areas. A student should aim to score high in this section as most of the questions were doable.

I had bought the Question book – The Official Guide to NMAT by GMAC 2015 published by GMAC and had practiced from there. I could solve 95% of the questions from the book. While doing the test papers given there, i found them pretty easy and i was able to score quite decently. But when I gave the actual exam, I found the paper a lot more difficult than what i had solved/expected. I found the previous year question papers a lot easier than this years. I wouldn’t go that far to call the book ‘fake’ since it is advertised in the official NMAT website, so i would only assume that the paper was difficult this year. Therefore considering this difficulty level this year, do you think the cutoffs have any chance of going down? I have scored 200 in NMAT 2016.

Vishal, I don’t think that the NM Mumbai cutoff will be lower than 205, however with a score of 200 you should get a call from NM Bangalore and Hyderabad.

Rishabh, since 210 is a scaled score one cannot say if exactly 70 correct answers will result in a score of 210. Rather than focus on the number of correct answers in the paper suggest that you focus on ensuring a good score in each of the three sections.
In LS out of 32 questions an attempt of 25+ is not difficult.
In LR out of 40 questions an attempt of 30+ is comfortable.
In QS out of 48 questions an attempt of 35+ is possible.
This would mean 90 attempts out of 120 questions and will definitely result in a score of over 210.

In fact, in one of the NMAT exam slots a DI set was exactly the same as the one in the second NMAT Mock.
Thus, while you might have found some questions different in your slot, that isn’t the general scenario.
Try solving all CL mocks before taking your next attempt.

Tejbir, for NMAT, higher the score – higher is the chance of call conversion. If you could take this 210 till about 225, you’re in for a great realistic chance of converting your NM Mumbai call.
Nothing can be said about IIFT since over the last three years the difficulty of the paper and therefore the cutoffs have fluctuated drastically. In an easy IIFT paper, aim for a 50+ score.

Niti, if you have prepared well since then, you can look forward to take the second attempt before CAT so that you have room for a third attempt post CAT.

Choosing the right questions is of utmost importance. Going by the trend the Reasoning section is slightly on the tougher side.
Thus, you could start with that, followed by Quant and ending with Verbal. Take it one question at a time. If by looking at it you feel you can do it then solve, else randomly mark the answer, mark the review button and move on.
If time permits come back to the questions you marked for review.
You could follow this in all 3 sections.

hello gp sir, i gave my nmat on 11th oct.. I guess i did fairly good in the language section, in LR i could not attempt 10-12 questions due to time shortage , in the QA section i marked most of the DI ques. arbitrarily since there wasn’t any time left to solve them( there were around 5-6 DI sets, which i came back to in the end). sir what could be my estimated score given i’ll have a decent level of accuracy.

Nandini considering you guessed about 20 questions in the Quant section (The DI questions), you could expect a score around 80 if you have 85% accuracy in the questions you did not guess. For Reasoning, considering 70% accuracy (since it’s slightly on the tougher side) you could expect a score of around 63-65.
Sir would a score above 210, on an average be sufficient to secure final conversion?
Shreehari, anything in excess of 210 should be sufficient to get a call. Usually, scores above 220 more or less ensures a final conversion, but not necessary.

Sir I am not getting good scores in mock . I cannot find out what happens to me when i give mocks but when i solve questions from Cat old papers and other materials i am able to solve them with ease
but during mocks i find them difficult and have poor accuracy. I had covered all the materials and have solved many questions but that is not reflected in my mock scores .I regularly practice and also when i analyse mocks i am able to solve almost 80% of paper but during mocks i find difficulty in solving questions
sir what could be the reason for that ,is it fault in my preparation or approach please help me as it is quite depressing for me.

My question to you is will the scores across the various slots during the entire 2.5 month window be normalized and scaled finally based on the difficulty level? [Last year my final scores were same as that of my respective window score 🙁 ]

Ankish, if you’re confident about your fundamentals you must take a mock and a previous year paper on alternate days. This should certainly be followed by a good in-depth analysis.

How exactly do you analyse a mock? I’ve heard you multiple times saying that analysing a mock is the most important part of attempting a mock; but I simple fail to see how a mock should be effectively analysed.

GP Sir,
Test Gym Classic has 5 Sectional tests on NMATs. Are they close to the actual NMAT, or is the level of difficulty of actual NMAT higher.
Also, are these tests sufficient or should one go for the NMAT Test series. I will be writing NMAT on December 1.

Ayush, the NMAT sectional tests will certainly help your prepare well for the NMAT level of difficulty. But it is important to have the complete mock practice for which you should go for a full fledged NMAT test series. Since your exam is on December 1 you have sufficient time to take all the tests.

I have been trying to contact you for a long time but not receiving the replies for my post. I need your help a alot sir. I am an ex cl student but preparing by myself this year. I have thoroughly studied the quant syllabus and practised questions of all LODs. the issue is that my quant scores from last 5 mocks i.e mock cat 11,12,13,14,16 are 56,48,46,46,46 all with 80-85% accuracy and I am unable to figure out what to do to go ahead of this. in analysis I find that I am unable to attempt difficult and mod-diff questions. time analysis tells me that i do correct questions in 30 min and rest is wasted in unsuccessful attempts. What does this tell about my prep sir and how can I improve this? I just cannot afford a loophole in my prep because this is my 2nd chance. Your reply is awaited sir.
Kushagra, calm down as persistence is the only key. It is good that you have done an in-depth analysis of your mocks and have come to some conclusion. If you believe that this is due to lack of clarity of concepts it is advised that you quickly go through all the concepts that you are struggling with. If these are silly mistakes athen go a little deeper and find out what kind of silly mistakes are these. Are these due to error in reading the questions or what else. Moreover, I think its more about exposure to more number of questions and practice. Since the remaining 30 mins is spent in futile attempts, that means that you need to practice different kinds of questions to gain familiarity with all the types.
Solve previous year questions and reattempt these mocks whenever you have time.
